We don't want to make too much of this, but a symptom of the Nationals' ownership void is that the Nationals are not mentioned in any of the rumors involving player deals on ESPN's Rumor Central. We are just not a factor in the free agent and major trade markets right now.

Considering the price and ability of most of the top tier free agents, that's not a bad thing. None of them are going to make this a playoff team, especially at the cost of salary and draft picks it'd take to sign most of them.
We might disagree on the advisability of signing players like Brian Giles, Paul Konerko, and Milton Bradley. There's a reason why teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cardinals are going after those players.
In any event, we don't want to be in a position for long where our argument is the following:
"Sure, these handcuffs prevent us from doing anything, but the cuffs are good because we'd just kill ourselves if we did do something!"
