Yankees, Clemens, $28 million? Genius!

An alert reader pointed me to this article from Fortune, which argues that the Clemens signing may put the Yankees into the playoffs.

Hopefully (from the Yankee perspective), those brilliant MBA's have not only the financial expertise to have made this decision, but the management background, also.

One can make anything look good on paper. It's a numbers game. However, you can't put team spirit on paper. Even though you say A-Rod, Jeeter, and others have signed off on this, they AND the rest of the team will be playing together to win the games.

Are they willing to get in the playoffs any way they can? Are they that desperate? Having been at the top during the late 90's through 2000, maybe they are. Maybe the 'non-players' in the deal (those that won't make a fuss, because no one will care), want desperately to wear the ring. Not being a Yankee fan to begin with, I'm just watching (hoping?) to see if this divisive decision slowly pulls this team apart.

Very interesting perspective. I do think there is a chance that the Yankees could implode this year if things start to go badly and it become clear they won't make the playoffs. Steinbrenner will go ballistic, A-Rod will bolt, and Clemens won't be there to see any of it because he'll be taking that day off.

I think the Yankees will be in it to the end so I don't think that will happen, but it's fun to dream!
