Wait a minute. I thought you said...

According to today's Post, the Nationals are considering acquiring Juan Pierre as an outfielder because, the team says, management wants to improve the team's on base percentage and speed on the basepaths. Upon hearing this, one naturally would assume that Pierre has a high OBP, right?

Here are Pierre's 2005 stats: .271/.322/.349. In 650 at bats, he had only 41 walks. All three of the Nationals' outfielders with the highest number of at bats (with the Nationals) had higher on base percentages than Pierre--Wilkerson, .352; Guillen, .337; Church, .354--and all three had substantially higher slugging percentages--Wilkerson, .405; Guillen, .475; Church, .457.

So, will acquiring Pierre improve the Nationals' OBP?

We report, you decide.

On the other hand, I don't know what we're yelling about. Pierre, after all, does have a rhythmic name: Juan D'Vaughn Pierre.

As Capitol Punishment pointed out, we clearly disagree on whether Pierre would be good for the team or not. I took up the counter-point at the Curly W (http://curlyw.blogspot.com/)

I agree with Brandon. You guyz are looking at the short term, again.

More importantly, this would allow the team a true leadoff hitter, move Wilkerson down to an RBI position(possible better pitches to hit with men on base), and provide a solid outfielder.

Of course, Wilkerson may not be back, but that's an entirely different discussion.

We would love a lead-off hitter, but we're just not sure that Pierre fits the bill. Believe me, we're holding no water for Wilkerson, but if we're going to spend a lot of money on a leadoff hitter, we'd like to invest it in someone with an on base percentage far higher than Pierre's, even in his prior years.

Good web site, Brandon. We'll link to it.
