Cristian Guzman: All-League

You'd like to get to the point where a number of Washington Nationals players are recognized on all-league teams, but not this team. This is from Rob Neyer's column on his All-Overpaid Team:

"SS: Cristian Guzman (24/24, $4.2M)

No, by MLB standards, $4.2 million isn't really all that much money. But Guzman's .235 on-base percentage is so incredibly, sublimely awful that he might belong on this page even if he were making half what he's making. If the Nationals had just a replacement-level shortstop -- Maicer Izturis, for instance -- they'd be sitting atop the wild-card standings right now."

The irrational insistance of The Excitable Boy to stick with Guzman after it was mind-numbingly obvious that Guzman was killing the Nats has materially harmed the team's chances of making the playoffs. Yes, The Excitable Boy acquired Deivi Cruz, but long after he should have found a replacement and sent Guzman to the minors. The cruel irony for Nats fans is that once Bowden made the change he decided to stick with Guzman anyway because of Jose Vidro's injury.
