A Tale of Two Pitchers

In 12 games and 69 2/3 innings with the Rangers this season, Ryan Drese gave up 96 hits and 50 earned runs, and he had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 20-24. He had an ERA of 6.46.

In 4 games and 26 innings with the Nationals, he has given up only 19 hits and 6 earned runs, and he has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8-6. He has an ERA of 2.08.

Is this the same guy? Interestingly, he gave up only 5 home runs in almost 70 innings in Texas and hasn't given up a home run yet in Washington. In other words, his problem with the Rangers wasn't one of giving up the gopher ball, but may have been one of control and his inability to keep his sinker down. He didn't strike out many batters in Texas, and hasn't been much better in that regard in D.C., which means that batters put the ball in play a lot against him. This may mean that his ERA can fluctuate wildly depending on whether it's one of those nights when the ball is falling between defensive players, but let's hope he continues the stellar pitching at least through tonight.
