Tonight the Nationals face an opponent that has been reeling of late. The San Diego Padres are 3-7 in their last ten games, and in the last seven days they have an OPS of .740 and an ERA of 6.71.
Unfortunately, the Nationals have been reeling as well. The Nats are also 3-7 in their last ten games and have an OPS of .706 in the last seven days. In other words, the Nats have been hitting even worse than the Padres, which has been hard to do given how badly the Padres have been playing. The Nats exploded offensively last night; let's see whether that was an anomaly or whether the Nats are going to materially improve on their anemic offense.
The Nationals have the clear advantage in pitching. Over the last seven days' the Nats' ERA is a phenomenal 2.60. It's a mark of how truly bad the Nats' hitting has been that they've lost so many games while getting among the best pitching in the league.
The Nats' pitching advantage is substantial tonight. The Padres start Pedro Astacio, who has been awful. His ERA is 6.06, and you have to wonder how long he'll be in the Major Leagues. The Nats start Livan Hernandez, who lately hasn't been as good as he wan in the first half, but he has still been very, very good. If Hernandez can put together another good performance, things look good for the Nats.
